Fujifilm X-T10 Review :: Underrated street camera with X-Trans II magic

The Fujifilm X-T10 is a hidden gem in the world of street photography. For those considering a compact, high-quality camera, the X-T10 offers a compelling alternative to the Fujifilm X100 series while retaining the allure and quality of its higher-end sibling, the Fujifilm X-T1. Here’s why the X-T10 is an excellent option for street photographers, especially for those who want a balance between flexibility, quality, and affordability.

What we will focus on in this blog:

  • Being a compelling alternative to an X100 series camera

  • Why its great for street photography

Compact and Discreet: A Stealthier Street Photography Tool

One of the standout features of the X-T10 is its size. Smaller and lighter than the Fujifilm X-T1, it’s a camera that doesn’t attract unnecessary attention—an essential factor for street photographers who often prefer to remain unnoticed while capturing candid moments. This compact form makes the X-T10 less conspicuous, similar to the X100 series, but with a key difference: the X-T10 offers the flexibility of interchangeable lenses. This feature gives you the advantage of adapting to various shooting conditions without compromising on the stealthy nature of a compact body.

Interchangeable Lenses: A Major Advantage Over the X100 Series

The Fujifilm X100 series is renowned for its fixed lens, offering a 35mm equivalent field of view, which is great for general street photography. However, street photographers often encounter diverse scenarios that might require a different focal length. The X-T10 shines here, with its ability to use Fujifilm’s extensive lineup of X-mount lenses. This flexibility means you can use a 23mm prime for a classic street look or switch to a wider 12mm for expansive shots, or even a longer 50mm if you want to get closer without moving physically. This versatility is a game-changer for photographers who crave the creative freedom to adapt their gear to their environment.

My preferred lenses for my X-T10 are the pancake twins!

The lenses are compact and keeps my camera small. I routinely switch between them to give me the versatility I need from indoor and outdoor situations. The 27mm (40mm equivalent) can feel tight indoors in intimate situations so the 18mm (28mm equivalent) can step in. Vice versa, the 27mm might not be wide enough for some landscapes so the 18mm can get a little more in that I want.

The Classic Fuji Magic: X-T10’s Image Quality and Film Simulations

The X-T10, like the X-T1, uses a 16.3 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor, which delivers that signature Fujifilm image quality. The color science is similar to what you get in the X100 series, which means you get the same vibrant colors, beautiful tones, and excellent dynamic range. The famous Fujifilm film simulations—such as Classic Chrome, Astia, and Velvia—are all available on the X-T10. These simulations give photographers the ability to replicate the look of classic film stocks, allowing street photographers to infuse their images with a timeless and cinematic quality. This "Fuji magic" in the X-T10 ensures that you’re not sacrificing quality despite opting for a more compact and affordable camera.

Manual Controls and Ergonomics: X-T10’s User-Friendly Design

Street photographers often prioritize manual control, and the X-T10 doesn’t disappoint in this regard. With its dedicated dials for shutter speed, exposure compensation, and drive mode, the camera’s layout is intuitive, echoing the analog-style controls found on the X-T1. This makes adjusting settings on the fly simple and efficient, an invaluable feature for street photography where conditions can change in an instant. The X-T10’s grip is comfortable, providing a solid hold without being bulky, making it easier to shoot one-handed or quickly move between shooting positions—ideal for dynamic street scenarios.

Fast Autofocus and Performance for Capturing Fleeting Moments

The X-T10’s autofocus system is quick and reliable, similar to the X-T1, featuring 77 phase-detection points that make focusing snappy and accurate. For street photographers, speed is often essential—you need to capture fleeting expressions and movements without hesitation. The X-T10’s autofocus performs admirably in this regard, even in challenging lighting conditions, allowing photographers to focus on composition rather than worrying about missed moments.

I recommend avoiding the continuous mode for optimal results. Keep in mind that it is an older model so won't be up to today's standards. However, for street work and zone focusing which a lot of photographers do, its more than enough.

My preferred way to shoot is to back button focus and slow down.

The continuous shooting mode, up to 8 frames per second, also ensures you won’t miss a critical action shot when the streets are buzzing with life.

Portability and Battery Life

A full day of street photography often means you’re on the move, exploring different neighborhoods, chasing light, and waiting for the perfect moment. The X-T10’s compact form means it can be comfortably carried around all day, fitting easily in a small bag or even a coat pocket with a pancake lens attached.

While battery life isn’t groundbreaking—similar to other Fujifilm X-series cameras—it’s sufficient for most day-long shoots if you have a spare or two handy, which I highly recommend.

Cost-Effective Option with High-End Performance

One of the most compelling reasons to consider the X-T10 over the X100 series or even the X-T1 is its affordability. The X-T10 was designed as a mid-range option, offering many of the X-T1’s premium features but at a lower price point. For street photographers just getting into the Fujifilm ecosystem or looking for a capable second body, the X-T10 is a fantastic choice. You’re getting nearly the same image quality and manual controls as the X-T1 without the extra expense, making it a perfect entry into serious street photography.

Build Quality and Design: Vintage Style, Modern Features

The X-T10, like other Fujifilm cameras, has a distinctive retro design that street photographers often love. It combines vintage aesthetics with modern technology, making it both a stylish and functional tool. Although the body is not weather-sealed like the X-T1, its metal dials and solid construction give it a durable feel. The design is practical yet elegant, embodying the classic camera look that many street photographers find inspiring.

Customizability and Firmware Support: An Ever-Improving Experience

One of the lesser-known strengths of Fujifilm cameras, including the X-T10, is the company’s commitment to firmware updates that enhance functionality even years after a camera’s release. This means that your X-T10 can receive improvements in autofocus, user interface, and even new features, extending the camera’s lifespan and keeping it relevant in a constantly evolving market. The X100 series also benefits from Fujifilm’s firmware support, but the X-T10’s customizable buttons, dials, and menus provide a tailored experience that’s unique to each photographer’s style.

Lens Recommendations: Maximizing the X-T10’s Potential for Street Photography

For those leaning towards the X-T10 as a street photography tool, pairing it with the right lenses is crucial. A few popular choices include:

Conclusion: A Street Photographer’s Dream in a Compact Form

The Fujifilm X-T10 is a camera that delivers a lot of what makes the X-T1 a beloved choice among photographers while remaining accessible and versatile. It offers the same Fuji magic in terms of image quality and film simulations, while providing the flexibility of interchangeable lenses—a significant advantage over the X100 series. For street photographers who want a camera that’s compact, powerful, and capable of adapting to various situations, the X-T10 is an excellent option. Its classic looks, intuitive controls, and high performance make it a worthy companion for anyone passionate about capturing the streets.
